Our Oral History
Just So You Know, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization inspired by an amazing woman,
Dr. Gail Lynn Addlestone.
Gail was diagnosed with breast cancer when she
was a newlywed and pregnant with her baby
girl. Faced with a devastating diagnosis, Gail’s
first priority was to find meaningful ways to spend
quality time with her husband, family and friends,
and to figure out ways to tell her daughter the
things a little girl would want and need to hear
from her mom.
She accomplished both when we set up a camera
one day. I interviewed Gail and she recorded her
wonderful and unique stories. Afterwards, Gail
and I realized what a priceless gift it is to spend
time with family, loved ones and friends, just
sitting and talking, asking questions and listening
to answers.
We thought about how challenging it is for
anyone, and cancer patients especially, to find
time, resources and energy to sit for a recorded
interview. And we both knew how difficult it is for
family and friends to ask someone with cancer to
do it. So, together, we came up with the idea for
Just So You Know. We envisioned a comfortable
room, stocked with easy-to-use recording equipment,
research tools and conversation starter kits.
Gail hoped that other people with cancer would
come with family and friends to record interviews,
tell stories, laugh, reminisce and just enjoy spending
time together.
I hope Gail’s story inspires you to tell yours. The
time you share and the memories you create will
be invaluable to you and your family and friends.
Thank you.
